Since its initial stages, LINCOS has been commended as an important project for the development of marginal communities in developing countries. The following timeline provides a sense of the evolution, expansin and recognition of LINCOS.

1998

The initial idea for LINCOS came from the group of professionals from the Costa Rican Foundation for Sustainable Development at the end of 1998. The participation of Mr. José María Figueres stands out in its genesis. Mr. Figueres wished to take several experiences and initiatives which had been successful during his administration (1994-1998), or which still had to be tested, and build upon them. A few months after the initial idea, the Foundation engaged two strategic partners: The MIT Media Lab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) from the United States, and Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, to jointly develop the overall concept. Partnering with these two institutions also brought the valuable participation of Dr. Sandy Pentland, Academic Director of the Media Lab, who was in charge of coordinating the project within the MIT, and of Dr. Alejandro Cruz, Rector of Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, who did the same in the Costa Rican institution.
