| The price of the LINCOS Units depends
on the number of technologies included and the number of Units installed.
(Economies of scale can reduce the average cost per Unit in large
installations.)
The technologies installed depend largely on the results of feasibility
studies that take place during the process of community selection.
Based on these studies, a menu of applications and components is
selected to install in each Unit. In broad terms, we wish to emphasize
that LINCOS can be adapted to
the particular requirements of each site.
For reference purposes, we provide an approximate guide to the
costs that can be anticipated:
| Unit’s cost |
$20.000 |
| Cost of technologies (an average of 35 technologies such as
equipment, labs, computer programs, materials, etc) |
$25.000 - $60.000 |
| Cost of preliminary studies |
$5.000 |
| Cost of training process (average of 6 one-month courses for
20 people) |
$20.000 - $50.000 |
| Cost of the Unit’s transportation to the site and customs
duties |
$5.000 |
| Cost of installation |
$7.000 |
| Approximate total cost $82.000
to $150.000 |
These costs include technical support through the monitoring center,
access to new technologies, new versions of programs and support
provided by specialists in the five subject areas, for a period
of one year.
The initial investment for the Units is made by governments, private
organizations, multinational corporations, banks committed to development,
and individuals.
Once operations begin, each community shall be responsible to cover
the operating expenses. We assist each community to create a financing
model through the sale of services that can sustain the Unit’s
monthly operation in the long term. The average monthly operating
expense is approximately $800, including the salaries of the educational
mediators and the coordinator, in addition to the payment of utilities,
and Internet access.
The Costa Rica Foundation for
Sustainable Development, DOES NOT SPONSOR any LINCOS Units,
but instead assists to redirect community applications to appropriate
financing entities.
